Street Pastors

The National Scheme

Street Pastors’ is an inter-denominational Church response to neighbourhood problems, engaging with people on the streets and in night-time venues to care, listen, dialogue and offer practical help.

Street Pastors have a concern for society, and in particular young people who feel themselves to be excluded and marginalised, and engage people where they are, in terms of their thinking (i.e. their perspective of life) and location (i.e. where they hang out be it on the streets, in the pubs and clubs or at parties etc).

Street Pastors also work with church and community leaders, with agencies and projects, both statutory and voluntary, to look at collaborative ways of working on issues affecting youth, and initiatives that will build trust between them and the Street Pastors.

When did it all start?

It was pioneered in London in 2003 by the Rev. Les Isaac, Director of the Ascension Trust. The trust oversees the development but each local area has it’s own Coordinator, Trustees and Management Group.

The Local Scheme
Cheshire West Street Pastors

Chester Street Pastors Teams have been operational since September 2008 and are now active on Friday & Saturday nights from about 10.00pm until around 03.00am and, in addition, Bank Holiday Sundays and Race nights from 6.00pm to 03.00am.

The Street Pastors in Chester are local Christian volunteers who walk the streets on busy weekend nights to care, listen and offer practical help to those they meet, where they are.

That can mean all sorts of things:

  • helping an intoxicated clubber into a taxi
  • listening as a homeless person pours their heart out
  • praying for peace as a scuffle breaks out on a corner
  • giving a pair of flip-flops to a girl whose shoes have become too uncomfortable to wear, after a night’s dancing
  • getting rid of dangerous broken glass
  • … and much more.

Street Pastors operate with the blessing of CWaC Council and  Cheshire Police, but are independent from them, and don’t get paid! They come from many types of church and many denominations. Their Christian faith is at the heart of all they do, but Street Pastors don’t preach or judge. Instead, they aim to offer a practical demonstration of the love and presence of God.
